SSSTS – Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme

2 Day course

This course is for first line managers - those who have to, or are about to, acquire supervisory responsibilities.

It provides an introduction to health and safety, welfare and environmental issues for those requiring an understanding of their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities in safety managing a construction site.

The aims and objectives on the course are:

To ensure that all those given supervisory responsibilities understand:

• Why they are carrying out their identified duties
• What is expected of them and
• To ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace

To ensure that at the end of the course Delegates will be able to:

• Understand the problems of the industry
• Have an understanding of how health and safety law is structured
• Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the manager in controlling the site safety
• Carry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statement
• Carry out site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
• Understand what is meant by proactive and reactive monitoring and appreciate their need.



SMSTS – Site Management Safety Training Scheme

5 Day Course (delivered as day release over 5 weeks)

The CITB SMSTS Training course is designed for site managers, agents and persons who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and workforce. The SMSTS course is 5 days in length and delegates MUST attend all days in order to qualify for certification.

The SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years, after which time candidates must sit the SMSTS Refresher course in order to renew their SMSTS certification The SMSTS course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

The aims and objectives on the course are:

At the end of the SMSTS course successful candidates will be able to: -

• implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
• implement new guidance and industry best practice
• state their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment

SMSTS Refresher Course

2 Day Course

The CITB SMSTS Refresher Training course is designed for candidates who have already taken and passed the SMSTS course. All SMSTS certificates issued after 1st January 2005 are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Candidates will be required to show their original 5 day certificate and if known provide details of where and when they took the course. The SMSTS Refresher course is 2 days in length and delegates MUST attend both days in order to qualify for re-certification.

The aim of the SMSTS refresher course is to improve awareness of developments in construction legislation and use of appropriate best practice. To enhance the existing managerial skills necessary to achieve compliance with any new legal duties and responsibilities placed on them and their colleagues.
